A Cat and his human minions fight to bring peace to humanity. For readers from 13 to 65, find compelling characters engaged in an adventure of search, conflict, and discovery.

Peace in the south. People settling in. Intelligent creatures moving to Vii from the RV Traveler.

Soon, meat will be in short supply. Hungry people will fight for what they need. Braden knows that livestock abounds in the north. It’s time to go get some.

But free trade in the north has been declared illegal by a new governor.

Once there, the livestock can wait. Free Trader Braden cannot tolerate anyone interfering with trade.
The Cat, his human minions, and the rest of the companions undertake a new journey where livestock, Hillcats, and the governor’s forces keep everyone jumping from one fire into another.

“After the 1st few pages I was hooked with the story. The characters flowed and the story line kept me enthralled. As the book grew so did the new companions. This is a rare book and author who can give a good story telling and keep you wanting more. I highly recommend this book to anyone… Craig Martelle, writes another outstanding book that leaves you wanting more.” five-star reviewer

Free the North! Free Trader Series Book 5 eBook Craig Martelle

This is the fifth book in Craig Martelle's "Free Trader" series. This series tells the story of Free Trader Braden and his journey to bring freedom and prosperity to Planet Vii.
After the battle of the Amazon peace descends upon the south. Braden realises that to grow further the south needs horses and water buffalo. The only place to get normal lifestock is to go back to the north. This means crossing the great desert twice. The desert is not a place where you want to go. Like all deserts it'll kill you without a second thought. Crossing the desert is a good portion of the book. The story of this is well told and conveys the challenges of crossing hostile terrain very well. The bit of the book that I really wanted to read is the freeing of the north and how Governor Anderle is defeated.
In the first book Free Trader Braden leaves the north just as free trade starts to break down. As he returns to the north Braden and team find that it has been taken over by a corrupt provincial government. The companions overthrow the provincial government through a series of battles. The final fight in Jefferson City is particularly well done. Fans of the KG books will recognise Anderle's name. In this book he gets his just deserves. I was hoping that his head would be left on a spike as an example. I'm sure there are some in-jokes I missed too especially around his wife and the names of the Governor's children. Ho-hum.
The best part of this book is the travel across the desert. The boy's day out to find more Hillcats is quite fun too. I wonder how the south is going to change when thirty-plus more Hillcats arrive. No one will be safe.
The Free Trader books don't seem to get a lot of attention. This will be the 14th review of this book. This is a shame as the writng and stories are as good as any in Martelle's oeuvre. Go cats and down with the dastardly Anderle.

Free the North! Free Trader Series Book 5 eBook Craig Martelle Reviews

With the south expanding and growing Braden goes home to trade for needed supplies and new settlers. When he arrives he finds that an evil overlord has set himself up as ruler and destroyed the trade. Free Trader Braden is not amused.

Another excellent addition to Martell’s Free Trader series with even more new characters who add depth and emotion to the story.
I apologize, Craig, that I haven't reviewed the earlier Free Trader books. If any readers of this review have happened upon this Book 5 without reading 1-4, go back and read them.

I haven't read 'everything' Craig has written but I'm currently up to date on his Nomad series which I also recommend.

I had to laugh out loud the first time I encountered the Provincial Governor's name. Good one, Craig!

Also, what was up in this book summary about readers 15-65? I'll have you know that I'm a few years beyond that and I enjoyed the Hell out of it - Harrumph! <<kidding>

Keep it up, Craig... I'd be interested to learn if your idea about Free Trading had its genesis in your experience in the 'wilds' of Alaska?
reminds me of Heilein
great job with visualization. you feel like your right there with the Braden and his band of friends.
great read. i really like this series and anxiously await more
I have been ruined. Since reading this series and Craig Martelle's follow-on series Cygnus Arising, I can't find anything else to read that is as exciting to read and as well written. I absolutely loved this book, the fifth in the series. Branden and his Hellcat are outstanding characters, as are the other characters which are introduced as the book and the series continues. The story line is riveting and original. Yet, as one reads this series, one continues to think of the writing style of Ann McCaffery, with a bit of Andre Norton thrown in. I believe any Science-fiction reader who has read and enjoyed these writers, will absolutely love this series!
The south needs herd animals to raise for food and trade. The companions must travel across the great desert to go north to acquire them. Braden wants to open trading between the north and the south - it's time to hit the road, again. The battles that are fought this time will be against heat, sand, and the complete destruction of the laws of trade in the north. Peace can only be obtained when all parties feel they have been treated fairly. I won't give away the plot because you need to read the book to enjoy the interplay between the characters. I will say that a certain cat gets his 'comeupance'. This group of companions continues to remind us that not all thinking creatures walk on two feet and upright.
