A two-thousand-year-old scroll is found in the Negev Desert. It describes what might be the final resting place of Mary, the mother of Jesus. To the disappointment of all, the ink is dated as less than a dozen years old. A fake. But one woman believes and goes searching. What she finds will change the world – forever.

VIRGIN is a thriller of international scope, traipsing through the Judean Wilderness, the shore of the Dead Sea, the River Lee in Ireland, the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Big Sur, and the Central Pacific. It's peopled with various believers and skeptics a priest and nun who are lovers; a cardinal who has spent his life debunking miracles and is now desperately in need of one; a US Senator with a son dying of AIDS; his vicious chief of security; and Kesev, the mysterious Israeli Shin Bet officer who was derelict in his unofficial life task of guarding the remains of "The Mother" and is determined to retrieve her remains at any cost.

And in a finale that harkens back to that 1950's film, "The Next Voice You Hear," the Virgin has news for the world – an unexpectedly secular message that will resonate with any open mind.

I am a huge F. Paul Wilson fan, and I adore his Repairman Jack character, but I'm starting to lose track of what is happening in that series due to the delay between reading each novel. I hadn't read a stand-alone F. Paul Wilson novel in awhile, so I was excited to find this one formatted for the Kindle (and at a nice price, to boot). This is one of those novels where you have disparate events happening simultaneously that eventually converge in a grand finale. Without giving away spoilers, I will say that there is definitely a message in this story, and in the current sociopolitical climate, I expect the theme of the novel will offend some readers. Maybe that is why I found the ideas expressed in the novel to be very refreshing - it makes you take a close look at that very same sociopolitical climate and does so in a positive way. I found the book a great read, and the ending was absolutely consistent with what Wilson had been building to since the very beginning of the novel. All in all, a great little read.

Virgin edition by F Paul Wilson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

F. Paul Wilson has written a number of apocalyptic thrillers over the years, but he has not really done much with the Christian end-of-the-world ideas that come from Revelations and have been done, for better or worse (often worse) in such stories as the Left Behind books. Wilson's Virgin is his venture into this genre, combining Christian mythology and his own writing style to make a book that can be entertaining to readers of many different religious backgrounds.

The story opens during the Gulf War in 1991. An errant Scud missile exposes a cave that has some unusual artifacts some scrolls that are found by a pair of young Arab shepherds who see a gold mine in the ancient documents. Years later, a forged version of these writings makes it way to Father Dan Fitzpatrick, a homeless advocate in New York City.

For all his good deeds, Fitzpatrick does have one sin he is secretly lovers with the nun Carrie Ferris. While Fitzpatrick treats the translated scroll as merely entertaining, Ferris takes it seriously and drags her lover to Israel in search of the body of the Virgin Mary herself. They are successful, setting up a series of events that are beyond either of their control.

If you are expecting a truly Christian novel, you will be disappointed. The ideas expressed herein, while reasonably respectful of Christianity, are more plot devices than reverent messages. In fact, by the end of the book, it is clear that this is not a promotion of any faith. Instead, this is a supernatural thriller, with Wilson's usual flair for creating page-turning fare. If you are a Wilson fan, you may not find this his best work, but it is still a fun read.
Another good one from Mr Wilson. Moving and exciting while it leaves me wanting more. Thankfully, he's a prolific writer.
"The Virgin" reads like it was written by a novice/ beginner and isn't properly researched. The wearing of the wimple began in the early Middle Ages, not before, and certainly not in Judea of the time. Nuns retained the medieval dress, including the wimple, until Vatican II or shortly thereafter.

The beginning seemed all right, but it just got silly after that. I had read The Keep and thought it was pretty good and then thought I'd try another, since it was in my recommendations. I really don't know how people could give this sophomoric novel a 5 star rating. But, different people respond to a work in different ways.

I thought it had an interesting premise and am drawn to Marian themes, Catholicism and mysticism in general but this was just a ridiculous plot.

I've downloaded a few other of his novels that seemed interesting and will try those to see if his work has improved any.

Update Although I didn't think much of this novel, another reviewer mentioned how good the 'Repairman Jack' series was - and it really is. I've read three of them now and am on my fourth, and they are as good, and probably better, than any crime/suspense series out there. What a nice surprise. Really excellent and highly recommended. And he is offering them at a really reasonable price - so if you're fed up paying upwards of $15 for a thriller, try this series.
