Kevin Kling, best known for his commentaries on National Public Radio's All Things Considered and his storytelling stage shows like Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log, delivers hilarious, often tender stories to listeners everywhere with his first book, The Dog Says How.
Kling's autobiographical tales are as enchanting as they are true to life hopping freight trains, getting hit by lightning, performing his banned play in Czechoslovakia, growing up in Minnesota, and eating things before knowing what they are.
In the comical yet poignant title story, Kling straddles the world of the ordinary and one rivaling Dante's inferno as he learns how to use voice-recognition software after a life-threatening motorcycle accident.

Kling is a talented writer and I am sure the print edition of this work demonstrates that. This audio version, however, is a disappointment. It is a re-recording of his previously released material, for the most part. The original CDs are far superior. His delivery used to be understated and charming. In this effort he is emoting to the rafters. Listeners are not going to miss any nuance as Kling practically bursts with emotion. I hope the scenery did not get stuck in his teeth as he chewed it. It is like he swallowed an acting guide written by a hack actor who advertises on matchbooks. Kling is going to show the world he can ACT!, darn it. If you want to experience Kling at his best, try any of the CDs he made before his accident.Product details

The Dog Says How (Audible Audio Edition) Kevin Kling a division of Recorded Books HighBridge Books Reviews
Somehow before I can read Kevin's latest book, I had to read "the dog says how" first. I consumed it a story at a time, over a couple weeks. Coming for the midwest (although not Minnesota) we may be a high tech family with texting, email, facebook, Macs and iPhones, but a good slow story is always welcomed. Having Kevin start in with the motorcycle accident, horrific as it was, he still makes you laugh with Goofus getting on the motorcycle. Then there's the taxidermy story about the squirrels, but you have to read it to see what they were doing, and what's the chance of so many family members being hit by lightning? Don't know anyone who's gotten out of a ticket the way his mom has...the stories were delightful and now I can go and start reading "Holiday Inn."
It was entertaining and I really liked the writing style. I am more of a novel person, but this was a nice alternative.
...not to mention well-written, this book is as every bit as wonderful as listening to Kevin Kling on NPR. Lacking only his fantastic delivery, the essays are delightful examples of the art of rollicking story telling. I laughed out loud repeatedly as I read the book in one sitting. My only complaint is Kevin is so funny, that it is easy to miss how beautifully he writes. I suppose I'll just need to read the book again!
Kevin, as a storyteller, practices an ancient art which has been replaced, for the most part, by the fast-food junk-food of TV storytelling, which is storytelling designed to get an audience hooked so they will sit through the commercials, which are also stories - stories which tell us how much our lives suck, and how we can be saved buy our product and you life will forever, for the better, be changed! All you need is Tums!
It's in this pseudo-culture of ours, where words are being drained of meaning, and against this backdrop, that Kevin plies his craft value-added story-telling. The value he adds is his own experience, his humor, his perspective on life, which are a welcome antidote to "reality TV." This book is real.
Recommended for the laughs, recommended for the wisdom, born of both laughter and tears.
Having loved hearing Kevin and his stories on NPR for years, I was thrilled to hear his interview on "On Being".
I had no idea of the difficulties he had experienced from the accident. And here he was with his humor and
generosity intact. I have listened to this CD a few times, recommended it to people who knew nothing of Kevin,
and passed it. It has been universally appreciated within my circle, for Kevin's simple and powerful stories and his
engaging delivery. He is supremely inspiring with no saccharine, no self promotion. Good listen for anyone who has had
medical issues, or just needs a good laugh.
The author works magic in his observations of life. It was easy to be present in his stories. These are not exceptional, exceptional writings. These are little shared treasures.
This is a collection of mostly autobiographical stories by Kling, a Minneapolis writer and performer, some of which have been heard on NPR. They are hilarious, poignant and just delicious. A great book to leave lying around for times when you have 10 spare minutes and want some gut-busting entertainment (or a quick cry).
Dachshund-lovers will be especially gratified by a couple of the stories, as will Midwesterners in general, and Minneapolitans (current and ex) in particular-- some great depictions of the Uptown Bar and other landmarks of the 70's and 80's.
A great gift, and apparently lots of folks have the same thought. I bought a couple of copies for my brothers for Christmas, and found that my sister had done the same! (They opened mine first, so she returned hers to B&N.)
